Becoming the lover of its master, Jade Fox grew resentful of how he refused to see her as a student for her gender.

  • Magnificent Bitch: Jade Fox once posed as a nun to infiltrate the Wudan school.
  • It's Popular, Now It Sucks!: Go on the Internet and you will find many wuxia fans who don't consider this a "real" wuxia movie, and say that it only became popular because it was made specifically for American audiences and not the more wuxia friendly China.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Asian audiences mostly found it overrated and not outstanding in terms of wuxia stories.
  • Gateway Series: Many a Westerner's first exposure to Wuxia films and fiction. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which stars Michelle Yeoh and several other high-profile Chinese stars, centers around two warriors in 19th-century Qing dynasty China searching for a missing sword.

  • Fridge Brilliance: Li Mu Bai only really unabashedly smiles while sparring with Jen.
  • Some thought it was excellent, while others thought it paled in comparison to other films in the genre.
  • Broken Base: Wuxia fans were quite divided on it.
  • It doesn't exactly help that the main stars were from different regions of East Asia ( Chow Yun-fat is from Hong Kong, Michelle Yeoh is Malaysian, Zhang Ziyi is from Beijing, and Chang Chen is Taiwanese), resulting in the four of them having very distinct regional accents (despite the film ostensibly being set in and around Beijing during the reign of the Qin Dynasty), making much of the dialogue sound unintentionally ridiculous to viewers who actually speak Mandarin.

See for yourself and watch “ Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny” here on the Netflix Instant, and as they produced the thing, it seems to be how they would want it. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a dramatic manga set in ancient China. So while the overall story isn’t as dramatic or grounded in emotion, it still reaches many of the same kung fu heights, with plenty of interesting characters engaging in some very epic action sequences, and it is some good stuff.

Yu Shu Lien pretty much comes out of retirement to help protect the sword from some bad guys who want it, led by a scary looking dude named Hades Dai (Jason Scott Lee!), and along the way she takes on an aspiring student named Snow Vase (Natasha Liu Bordizzo, her first role, which she slays), and there’s also a guy in a cage that ends up being very important.īut really this movie is just here to give us some more sweet kung fu action and we definitely get it, especially when Silent Wolf (Donnie Yen, yet another legend), presumed killed in the first movie, shows up in this one and busts heads all along the way, quickly forming his own posse of fighters to help him out.

It helps to have a legendary and awesome actress in the lead role, as well as another legend behind the camera, as Michelle Yeoh returned to reprise the role of Yu Shu Lien, and the original film’s fight choreographer and legit martial arts master Yuen Woo-Ping returned to take on directing duties this time. “ Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny” is one of those sequels that pretty much no one asked for, but is also one of those rare cases in which said unwanted sequel actually turned out pretty good. As heard in episode 168 of Cinema Crespodiso.
